Every service uses the same test, the ASVAB. Your AFQT score decides if you can enlist, and your line scores decide which jobs are open. If you fall short, you can retest after one month.

   Step 1 of 8: Talk to a recruiter

   The recruiter asks about your age, health, education, drug use and arrest record. If you do not qualify, you are not sent to test.

   Step 2 of 8: ASVAB at a MEPS or MET site

   10 subtests on a computer that adapts to your level. No calculator. It takes about 2 hours on average. Your scores are ready right after.

   Step 3 of 8: AFQT score

   A percentile from 1 to 99, built from your verbal and math subtests. Each service sets its own minimum. The Army asks for at least 31.

   Step 4 of 8: Line scores

   Each service combines your subtest scores into composites. They decide which military jobs you can get. Scores stay valid for two years.

   Step 5 of 8: Medical exam at MEPS

   Hearing and vision, blood and urine tests, drug and alcohol tests, and a physical evaluation. MEPS processing takes one to two days.

   Step 6 of 8: Choose your job

   With a guidance counselor. Your options depend on your line scores and on the jobs open at the time.

   Step 7 of 8: Pre-Enlistment Interview and contract

   You are fingerprinted and asked questions that can make you ineligible. Then you sign your enlistment contract.

   Step 8 of 8: Oath of Enlistment

   A commissioned officer leads the ceremony and signs your contract. You are now enlisted.
